Protected cycle lanes in Rathmines

I was cycling through Rathmines on Sunday 5th July 2020, and noticed that Dublin City Council had been busy adding bollards and orcas to protect the cycle lane.

In the past this cycle lane was notorious for being blocked by parked vehicles, which meant that groups such as I BIKE Dublin used to take direct action to protect the lane by getting volunteers to stand out in the road and physically block drivers from parking in the cycle lane.

The situation also encouraged tweeting with the hashtag #RathminesBikeLaneCount to record the number of illegally parked vehicles.

Now look at it…

The bollards opposite St Mary’s College, and on the run up to the Richmond Hill junction
After the Domino’s Pizza takeaway the lane protection stops. There are some properties with off-street parking on the left, so I’m guessing that access had to be maintained. And after that there’s a bus stop.
The orcas and wands start again just after the bus stop.
The orcas and wands continue until the junction with Castlewood Avenue, only stopping for the bus stops.
