Dutch Bike Shop

The Dutch Bike Shop in the Goatstown area of Dublin is a family-run business owned and run by Astrid and Frank.

They import and sell a range of Dutch bikes, which have an upright and comfortable riding position, and also have things like mudguards, pannier racks, chain guards, and dynamo lights included in the price. These bikes are great for city cycling as the upright position gives great visibility of the road, and they are designed for anyone, of whatever ability, to get about easily.

These bikes aren’t cheap, but you get what you pay for. They are really good quality and will last for a long time with only minimal maintenance. So you’re not going to spend a fortune replacing components over time.

I purchased a Workcycles bike from them just under 5 years ago, and very little has gone wrong with it since then. Granted it’s pretty heavy (the frame is solid steel) and I’m not going to win any speed records on it, but it’s really sturdy (which helps because I’m a heavier rider) and comfortable to ride for my daily 15km commute.

They also sell a good range of cargo bikes, which are great for transporting the kids or your weekly grocery shop around – and are often used by people instead of owning a car.

A visit to their shop is definitely recommended, to see all their beautiful bikes, learn from their expert advice, and to give the bikes a test ride. Just be sure to bring your wallet, because you’re not going to be able to leave without buying one!

Update: In 2020 the Dutch Bike Shop in Dublin decided to close it’s retail outlet in Goatstown. Their business continues, but online only for sales – see dutchbikeshop.ie – and a mobile repair service.
